Balloon Valvotomy, also known as Balloon Valvuloplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that widens or opens the narrowed heart valves and improves the overall function of the heart.

In this procedure, a thin flexible tube (catheter) is inserted through an artery into a blood vessel in the groin and positioned towards the aorta into the heart. Once the catheter reaches the narrowed mitral valve, a large balloon device located at the tip of the catheter is inflated until the flaps (leaflets) of the valve are pushed open. Once the valve has been opened, the balloon is deflated and the catheter is removed. This process increases the size of the mitral valve opening and allows more blood to flow from the left atrium to the right atrium.

Identifying the cause of the narrowed heart valves will help the Cardiologist to determine if a balloon Valvotomy is a better treatment plan for you.

HOW WELL IT WORKS

A balloon Valvotomy helps the valve to function normally and to let the blood flow through the heart. The improved blood flow relieves symptoms. Blood pressure inside the left atrium decreases, which also helps to relieve the symptoms of lung congestion.
